Our Mission
Here at Doe A Deer, we aspire to change the way the world thinks about sustainability in order to combat a variety of social, economic, and environmental issues.
With the Dough To Go app, we aim to connect food waste with food insecurity. Our solution prioritizes public health through the use of efficient, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly alternatives to our current food waste solutions.
The Problem
Currently, around 1.3 billion tons of food is either lost or wasted each year. Rotted and wasted food produce greenhouse gases that result in roughly 9.3 billion tonnes of CO2 in just 2017- that number increases each year.
The global food system emits roughly 1/3 of all greenhouse gases, with 38% of all food being wasted. At the same time, roughly 800 million people are living in food insecurity every day. Not only is the waste extremely harmful to the environment, but it’s unfair to the 10% of the global population living in hunger.

The Method:
Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Scientists have found a way to decompose organic matter in a way that’s carbon friendly and reusable.
Introducing Black Soldier Fly Larvae, a type of fly larvae that rapidly consumes virtually any organic matter and excretes nutrient-rich frass- effectively transforming organic waste into nutritious fertilizer. Additionally, the mature larvae themselves are a valuable source of protein and amino acids, prized by fish, poultry, and pig farmers. They’re even suited for pet and- if treated- human consumption.
These larvae are the key to a sustainable future, and we at Doe A Deer are here to take the first step. To read more about them, click the link below:

The Solution:
Digitalizing
The Dough To Go app allows anyone to donate their food waste, whether it’s household trash or from business establishments. Donors simply locate their nearest BSF composting facility and apply for drop off. As donors, their food waste collection is tracked, and the app demonstrates the economic and environmental benefits their donations have had on the community.

The food waste is collected by volunteer compost hosts. These can be people with BSF farms in their backyards or farms. Anyone interested in becoming a host is provided with a guide and discounted materials from the app to process their own compost. By accepting food waste donations, both hosts and donors earn points- exchangeable for coupons and cash rewards.

By using Dough To Go, communities will not only profit off selling frass, larvae, compost tea, and more, but also save substantial amounts of money by providing compost to local farms rather than wasting organic material and having it decompose toxically in landfills. This project could effectively reduce a community’s carbon footprint by roughly 10%. In a scenario which 300 average American households choose to participate in donating their waste, this would result in 145.6 tons of greenhouse gas emissions being prevented in just one year. Additionally, both hosts and donors in the community would save roughly $450k in a year by composting their waste.
